Lawyer, of Sharon, Conn.; graduate of Yale, 1782; purchased land in the Western Reserve; state legislator, associate judge, farmer, and landowner. Died in New York City in 1840. Canfield's son, Henry Judson Canfield married Sally Ruth Ferris, daughter of Walter Ferriss and Sarah (Sally) Morgan Ferris. The Connecticut Land Company (1795-1809) was a syndicate of 35 groups representing 58 individuals who purchased on credit the majority of Connecticut's Western Reserve land as a speculative venture. Proceeds from the sale of the Reserve were used to establish the Connecticut School Fund.
